Our Attractions

We want you to enjoy your visit to the Heritage Centre, the branch line railway and the nature trail. We now have an an entrance charge to access the site beyond Granites patio.

Access to the car park, coffee shop, Granite’s patio, play area and the Heritage rooms remains free. We may make an additional charge for special events and a fee will be payable to catch the train.

We do not currently accept school, nursery or similar group visits as the site does not yet have the infrastructure needed to support school visits.

Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre is the heart and gateway to our attraction. Our Heritage Rooms spread over both floors. The Quiet Room can also be found on the first floor. There is ample free car parking, and access to the railway and museum. If you want to know more about how the Heritage Centre came into being then why not read about the background to the Centre.

Granite’s Coffee Shop

Within the Heritage Centre, on the ground floor, is Granite’s Coffee Shop serving snacks and light lunches throughout the day. Additional seating is available on the patio, with views over the railway and quarry. There is also access to a small children’s play area.

Mountsorrel Railway

The railway was officially opened on the 24th October 2015. It links Mountsorrel and Nunckley Hill stations with the Great Central Railway at Swithland Sidings. Shuttle trains run to the sidings and back on selected weekends throughout the year.

Railway Museum

In the base of the old quarry you will find our small railway museum with standard gauge railway sidings and a short section of narrow gauge track. Here you will find our restored granite wagons as well as exhibits on loan from Leicestershire County Council.

Nunckley Trail

Our half mile nature trail winds through differing woodland habitats, the ‘Wildlife Warrior’ activity areas, as well as the ruins of the old ‘Dobb Hall’ and the industrial archaeology of the old Nunckley Hill quarry. Why not take a look at videos of the trail? The Trail is accessed from the Heritage Centre and is open daily from 10am to 5pm or dusk, whichever is earlier..

Spinney Trail

Our Spinney Trail is a circular path through the woods to the North of the car park. Within the Spinney children can explore their creative side in the den building area, whilst adjacent to the Spinney Trail we have a new high-level seating area with panoramic views over the quarry and railway, served by “Granite’s Shack”, a small refreshment kiosk serving hot & cold drinks and ice creams. Our garden railway opens over the spring bank holiday and will run on selected days during the summer..

Quarrying Recreation

We have created a scene from the late 19th century. Stonemasons’ huts would have been served by tub wagons pushed along a narrow gauge railway and then on to the standard gauge plank wagons. There is also a small exhibition building where you can find out more about the history of the quarry and the restoration of the railway. The quarrying recreation area opens Spring 2017.
