We have been asked if we have a peaceful area where loved one’s ashes could be spread, and a plaque erected in their memory. After 18 months of design and planning, our Peace Garden opened in the summer of 2021 for visitors to enjoy.
We have created a circular garden in a beautiful and peaceful part of the old quarry bottom. On one side is a semi circle of upright railway sleepers where elegant granite plaques will be placed in memory of loved ones. On the opposite side there are benches, granite rock features and it is planted with a variety of flowers, ensuring the garden has colour throughout the year.
Each granite plaque costs £210 and is 200 mm by 100 mm (7¾” by 4″ ) and can contain three lines of text. The first and last lines can have up to 22 characters, the second line 20 characters. Once you have completed an order form with your personalisation we will order your plaque, which takes around four weeks to arrive. When it arrives we will contact you and invite you to come and view your loved one’s plaque with family and friends.
The first time you visit your loved one’s plaque we invite you to lay fresh flowers at the base of the sleeper, which will be left for 3 days. After this initial visit no flowers, real or artificial, can be laid. No mementos or wreaths are to be left in the Peace Garden at anytime. The first time you have arranged to see your plaque, we allow family and friends to sprinkle a small amount of your loved one’s ashes at the base of the sleeper, for no extra charge.
The Peace Garden is available for visits during normal Heritage Centre opening times and days. Note that the Heritage Centre site is closed each year from December 24th until January 1st.
You can download a copy of Peace Garden Leaflet and an order form is also available for you to download here.
