Our 45mm gauge Garden Railway can host both battery and steam-driven locomotives. The layout covers an area of around 15m x 10m and comprises a large circle, with passing loop and sidings. A “Y” junction leads the track through the main control building from where it continues to a return loop serviced by another siding.
We now have Thomas, Emily, Percy and James, with Clarabel and Annie the coaches, running on the layout, whilst some of our volunteers bring their own locos and rolling stock from time to time. Visitors (of all ages) may drive a loco under supervision (£1.50 charge applies for 5 minutes).
If you have a suitable loco, and would like to operate it on our track then please get in touch and we will be happy to arrange a day.
The garden railway runs most weekends and throughout the school holidays (volunteer availability permitting) and is operated entirely by our volunteers. We need additional volunteers to help operate the railway for visitors to drive the trains. If you are interested please take a look at our volunteering opportunities page. Anyone aged 14 or over can volunteer and younger volunteers are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Operating the garden railway might be the ideal pastime for a parent/child or grandparent/grandchild team through the holidays, or as volunteering for those undertaking taking a Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Volunteer your hours here… We are always happy to welcome volunteers and training is provided.
