In 2007 our aims seemed daunting; to restore the 1¼ miles of the Mountsorrel Railway. With £100,000 raised from the local community and help from local business our 120 volunteers have delivered so much more! Contributing over 140,000 hours of volunteer labour they restored the rail line, built Mountsorrel Station with car park and access, repaired two stone bridges and then went on to create the Mountsorrel And Rothley Community Heritage Centre and all the many areas of interest that the heritage centre site now contains.

Our aim is to encourage visitors to find out and learn about our local heritage and ecology, as well as providing a pleasant area and environment to relax and enjoy themselves.

We opened to the public on 25th April 2016. The site and all it contains was an immediate hit with visitors and even HRH The Prince of Wales came for an official visit on 25th January 2017!

Despite all that we have achieved so far, we still have more to do! Our Discovery Project will allow visitors to learn even more about our local area through interactive displays and cutting edge technology. It will also allow us to fully realise the educational potential the site offers.

Entry to the site and car parking is free. We rely solely on the income from our Granite’s Coffee Shop to provide the funds needed to run and maintain the site, so we hope you’ll be able to spare time during your visit to stop by Granite’s to sample the delights available there. If your visit doesn’t allow time for Granite’s then please consider leaving a donation in our donation box.

The heritage centre site is open all year, seven days a week from 10:00am until 4:45pm. Last entry to the site and service in Granite’s is at 4:30pm. Gates are locked at 5:00pm.

We do not currently accept school, nursery or similar group visits as the site does not currently have the infrastructure or level of insurance needed to support those group visits. Our volunteers are working to fully develop the educational possibilities that the heritage centre site is able to offer and we hope to be able to start taking bookings some time in the future. Further details will appear on our website as things progress.

With the exception of Assistance Dogs, we only allow dogs onto the patio area outside Granite’s, they are not allowed inside the heritage centre building or any other areas of the site including the nature trails.

Feel free to look around our website to see our vision for the Centre. Why not download our brochure for a brief introduction to us. To keep up to date with our progress, and to read the latest news, check out our RSS feed, or if you would like to receive e-mail updates on our progress and also details of events and special offers then why not sign up for our Newsletter. If you feel you would like to help with our project you can contribute money, materials, or volunteer your time, to transform the site into your Heritage Centre.
