Two historic railway items now have a new home.
The items are a former Bardon Hill quarry diesel locomotive and a yellow mineral wagon, both of which are part of the Leicestershire County Council collection and were formerly based at Snibston Discovery Museum. On loan they will be used for demonstration wagon trains in and around Nunckley Hill quarry.
Councillor Richard Blunt, cabinet member for museums said “I’ve always said that, whenever we had an opportunity, I wanted some items from our museum collection to go on public display. I’m delighted that this loco and wagon will soon be used in an apt setting – a museum based in a former quarry.”
A wooden-bodied railway wagon, painted in the colours of local merchants, Ellis & Everard.
Main image above: A Ruston & Hornsby 48DS diesel locomotive built 1956. Delivered new to Bardon Hill Quarries and used until circa 1982 when it was preserved. It was purchased by Leicestershire County Council Museums Service in 2000.
